About The Department

The Department of Petrochemical Technology was established in the year 2013. The Department offers B.Tech (Petrochemical Technology) from 2013–2014. Petrochemical Technology is one of the most popular branches of engineering which deals with the large-scale production of chemicals and speciality chemicals. Petrochemical Engineers apply both the knowledge of chemistry and the principles of engineering in the chemical industry and thus forming a bridge between science and production of chemicals. They are involved in a wide variety of activities like designing of equipment, process development for chemical manufacturing on a large scale, planning, testing various ways of production and treatment of by-products, and supervising manufacturing activities.

Petrochemical Technologists (also known as Process Engineers and Project Engineers) work in various industries such as chemicals, speciality chemicals, petroleum and petrochemicals, bio-chemicals, food preservation, pharmaceuticals, electronic materials, materials of everyday life, energy, environment, etc.

The petrochemical engineer’s education includes an intense sequence of chemistry courses in addition to mathematics, physics, and engineering sciences. Students also study subjects relating to processes, equipment, and plants used in chemical industries. This intensive study of engineering and science provides a basis for the graduating student to conduct Research, improve processes or materials, develop, implement and plant design, or direct operations of industrial plants involving chemical treatment methods. The Petrochemical Technology curriculum consists of the core courses: Process Calculations, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Operations, Petroleum Processing Primary Treatment and Secondary Treatment, Chemical Technology, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Chemical and Catalytic Reaction Engineering, Process Instrumentation and Dynamics Control, and Equipment Design.

The Department has highly qualified faculty, many of them are with Ph.D. degree. Faculty are doing Research (besides teaching) in the areas of nanomaterial’s, Process control, bio-fuels, wastewater treatment, polymeric mixed matrix composites, photo catalytic degradation, polymeric mixed matrix membranes, preparation of chemicals from waste materials, absorption and extraction, photo-catalysis, etc. The research works are published in reputed journals and conferences. The Department has state-of-art laboratory equipment, modern analytical instruments (UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, HPLC, GC, AAS, etc.) and chemical engineering software (Ansys, AspenPlus, MATLAB & Simulink) for carrying out a research program.

The Department periodically organizes internship-training programs, seminar, workshops, and conferences in many chemical engineering areas. Industrial visits and tours are arranged periodically to improve the knowledge to the students. Students are encouraged to undergo in-plant training. In the third and final year of study, personality development training programs are conducted to provide the students for placement. Guidance is given for competitive exams such as GATE, GRE, etc.
